"If Joan of Arc had diabetes, all of Rouen would have smelled of caramel"

-José Artur-

Even the shops wink at me for me to photograph them!

No, of course not, it's just one of my little ramblings ... one more.

However, it is true that traders make great efforts to attract the attention of passersby. They are creative, often change their window and not only with the seasons. But, in addition, many of these merchants are very fortunate, especially on the Right Bank, to have their shop in the historic districts of the city. What gives them a very particular cachet.

I like to find a hardware store, a haberdashery, all these small shops with flavors of yesteryear in the heart of the city.

Rouen is alive thanks not only to its history & its monuments but also thanks to all its shops of all kinds, of all prices.

Of course not everything is perfect-nothing ever is, nowhere-but, it's not what I want to show here. I just took pictures of my "favorites" , whether shops, decoration in the windows and more signs.

And also oddities ... just by feeling.

" Antique dealers" -  Damiette & Malpalu streets

Pedestrian area where the antique dealers knew the golden age of the profession, I recommend this walk. We find a real atmosphere of yesteryear in  Damiette street which starts from the Saint Maclou church to take you to the Saint Ouen Abbey (don't see any religious promotion in my explanation .... just a good way to find your way around ...!).

If you want to learn more, I advise you to read the article " The Damiette street: the kingdom of antique dealers" of the Tendance Ouest newspaper (free  newspaper of Rouen)

   "Saint-Romain street"

Nothing evokes the Middle Ages more than Saint -Romain street. Here was the heart of the city, always up to date, it offers a rich decor  full of History where walking around is a treat.

    "Saint-Nicolas street"

    "Gros Horloge street"

Emblematic street of Rouen which leads from the Old Market square to the Cathedral of Rouen. Paved and pedestrian street, it makes the happiness of walkers, tourists ... and, traders.

      "Alsace Lorraine street"

The sweet melody of the Luthier

A break in "Barthélémy" square

Passing through Martainville street ...

... appears Saint Mark's Square

     Republic street

One of the main arteries, "République" street runs from Corneille bridge to the Town Hall in Rouen.

Joan of Arc Street

2019. New year, new windows. In fact, I rediscover them, the Rouen traders are often inspired, I enjoy the decorations, unusual objects, pretty staging. They change the windows more often than I take a picture of them but when it takes me, nothing stops me!

I take pleasure in noting the details that adorn the exteriors of some shops that are located in old buildings and only add to the charm of these places. I tell myself that they are really lucky to have been involuntarily helped by the inspiration of our artists of yesteryear.

I stroll and take the time to discover the new stores, those that have closed for cessation of activity. I am reassured when they closed for "retirement": it is deserved. A new store will quickly take its place, I would then be eager to return by this place to go and discover the novelty. I will cross my fingers so that it is not again a hairdresser or a real estate agent, these two categories reproducing too quickly in our cities ... or even an optician, because it is ophthalmologists which we lack of in Rouen, opticians reproduce very quickly in the landscape.

"Calzedonia"

No Julia Roberts around, but beautiful girls anyway!

"Personalities"

Rouen shops

This is the name of this shop, I did not invent anything. And it has character. Open at the beginning of December 2018, the shop may seem like  small seen from the facade, but it is very long and bursting at the seams with decorative elements of all kinds. Sometimes surprising objects, often good ideas.

The decoration in the window often changes and I find it clever because it always makes me want to stop ... I must not be the only one in this case ...

"Humans accepted"

"Accepted" ... I could have written "tolerated"! ...

I loved this sign as soon as I spotted it in Cauchoise street in Roue. Of course, I think Georges Orwell would have appreciated it.

"Cruelty to animals and even indifference to their suffering is one of the heaviest sins of humanity in my opinion. It is the basis of human evil. If man creates so much suffering, what right does he have to complain about his own suffering?"

The " Scripte " shop is a joy for the eyes, scribblers like me. However, I know that I will never enter it, I can only dream in front of the windows of this store.

Why?

Because the prices are too high for my little purse. But dreaming also suits me.

"Yesterday"

At the corner of the streets of the Republic and the Augustinians, the advert or better said "the publicity" as it was said a long time ago, stood on the walls. We surely thought then that things would last for decades, that future generations would take over the family business. Nothing could destroy or erase them.

Times have changed, everything is going so fast that we barely have time today to read ads that have become ephemeral. Businesses are made and unmade at the speed of light.

That's how it is, so you might as well take advantage of what remains engraved on the walls.

  "The Robec Market"

Rouen shops

"What if we told you that it was no longer worth waiting for Sunday to do your market? TheRobec's market is the brand new 100% local organic address in downtown Rouen.

Loca-what? "Locavore". Local organic sales are simply sourcing from local producers and farmers. Reduce intermediaries as much as possible, favor the local and focus on quality products. Basically, we eat Norman and good! "(Sic)
